Definition

Let Γ\Gamma be an oriented rectifiable curve in ℂ\C, closed or not, and let φ ⁣:Γ→ℂ\varphi \colon \Gamma \to \C be continuous. The Cauchy-type integral of φ\varphi over Γ\Gamma is the function Φ(z)=12πi∫Γφ(τ)τ−z dτ,z∈ℂ∖Γ,\Phi(z) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau)}{\tau - z} \, d\tau, \quad z \in \C \setminus \Gamma, where the integral is a contour integral. The function φ\varphi is its density.

Remarks

The function Φ\Phi is holomorphic on ℂ∖Γ\C \setminus \Gamma, and Φ(z)→0\Phi(z) \to 0 as z→∞z \to \infty. Example: let Γ\Gamma be the unit circle, oriented counterclockwise, and φ(τ)=τ−1\varphi(\tau) = \tau^{-1}. For ∣z∣<1\abs{z} < 1, the integrand 1τ(τ−z)=1z(1τ−z−1τ)\frac{1}{\tau(\tau - z)} = \frac{1}{z} \left( \frac{1}{\tau - z} - \frac{1}{\tau} \right) gives Φ(z)=1z(1−1)=0\Phi(z) = \frac{1}{z}(1 - 1) = 0; for ∣z∣>1\abs{z} > 1 it gives Φ(z)=1z(0−1)=−1z\Phi(z) = \frac{1}{z}(0 - 1) = -\frac{1}{z}. So the boundary values from inside and outside are 00 and −τ−1-\tau^{-1}, and their difference is φ(τ)\varphi(\tau). Non-example: for z∈Γz \in \Gamma the formula is not a convergent integral in general. The reason is that 1τ−z\frac{1}{\tau - z} is not integrable along Γ\Gamma near τ=z\tau = z. On Γ\Gamma one uses instead the Cauchy principal value, as in singular integral equations. Let Γ\Gamma be a closed curve bounding a domain DD, and let φ\varphi be the boundary value of a function FF holomorphic on DD and continuous on its closure. Then Φ=F\Phi = F on DD and Φ=0\Phi = 0 outside D‾\overline{D}, by Cauchy's integral formula and Cauchy's theorem. The boundary values of Φ\Phi for Hölder continuous φ\varphi are given by the Sokhotski–Plemelj formulae.
