Statement

Let Γ\Gamma be a smooth simple closed curve in ℂ\C, oriented counterclockwise, with interior domain D+D^+ and exterior domain D−D^-. Let φ ⁣:Γ→ℂ\varphi \colon \Gamma \to \C be Hölder continuous, and let Φ(z)=12πi∫Γφ(τ)τ−z dτ\Phi(z) = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau)}{\tau - z} \, d\tau for z∉Γz \notin \Gamma be its Cauchy-type integral. Let t∈Γt \in \Gamma. Then the limit Φ+(t)\Phi^+(t) of Φ(z)\Phi(z) as z→tz \to t with z∈D+z \in D^+ exists, and so does the limit Φ−(t)\Phi^-(t) as z→tz \to t with z∈D−z \in D^-. They are Φ±(t)=±12φ(t)+12πi p.v.∫Γφ(τ)τ−t dτ,\Phi^{\pm}(t) = \pm \frac12 \varphi(t) + \frac{1}{2\pi i} \, \mathrm{p.v.} \int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau)}{\tau - t} \, d\tau, where p.v.\mathrm{p.v.} is the Cauchy principal value. Equivalently, Φ+(t)−Φ−(t)=φ(t),Φ+(t)+Φ−(t)=1πi p.v.∫Γφ(τ)τ−t dτ.\Phi^+(t) - \Phi^-(t) = \varphi(t), \qquad \Phi^+(t) + \Phi^-(t) = \frac{1}{\pi i} \, \mathrm{p.v.} \int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau)}{\tau - t} \, d\tau.

Remarks

Proof idea: write ∫Γφ(τ)τ−z dτ=∫Γφ(τ)−φ(t)τ−z dτ+φ(t)∫Γdττ−z\int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau)}{\tau - z} \, d\tau = \int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau) - \varphi(t)}{\tau - z} \, d\tau + \varphi(t) \int_\Gamma \frac{d\tau}{\tau - z}. The last integral is 2πi2\pi i for z∈D+z \in D^+ and 00 for z∈D−z \in D^-. The Hölder condition makes the first integral continuous up to Γ\Gamma from both sides, with value p.v.∫Γφ(τ)−φ(t)τ−t dτ\mathrm{p.v.} \int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau) - \varphi(t)}{\tau - t} \, d\tau at tt. Finally, p.v.∫Γdττ−t=πi\mathrm{p.v.} \int_\Gamma \frac{d\tau}{\tau - t} = \pi i, half of 2πi2\pi i, because the excised small arc around tt leaves half a turn.

Example: on the unit circle with φ(τ)=τ−1\varphi(\tau) = \tau^{-1}, one has Φ=0\Phi = 0 on D+D^+ and Φ(z)=−1/z\Phi(z) = -1/z on D−D^-. So Φ+(t)−Φ−(t)=t−1=φ(t)\Phi^+(t) - \Phi^-(t) = t^{-1} = \varphi(t), and the principal value integral equals πi(Φ+(t)+Φ−(t))=−πi t−1\pi i (\Phi^+(t) + \Phi^-(t)) = -\pi i \, t^{-1}.

Continuity of φ\varphi alone is not enough: there are continuous densities whose principal value integral fails to exist at some points. The formulae also hold on a smooth open arc, at every point other than the endpoints. There Φ+\Phi^+ is the limit from the left of the arc and Φ−\Phi^- the limit from the right. For the real line they reduce to the Sokhotski–Plemelj theorem.

For a student

The formulae are the bridge between boundary value problems for holomorphic functions and singular integral equations. The Riemann–Hilbert problem Φ+=GΦ−+g\Phi^+ = G \Phi^- + g on Γ\Gamma is solved by writing the unknowns as Cauchy-type integrals. Conversely, substituting Φ±\Phi^\pm into the formulae turns the singular integral equation aφ+bSφ=fa \varphi + b S \varphi = f, with Sφ=1πip.v.∫Γφ(τ)τ−tdτS \varphi = \frac{1}{\pi i} \mathrm{p.v.} \int_\Gamma \frac{\varphi(\tau)}{\tau - t} d\tau, into the boundary condition (a+b)Φ+−(a−b)Φ−=f(a + b) \Phi^+ - (a - b) \Phi^- = f. This reduction is the basis of the theory of the index of a singular integral operator.
