Cauchy principal value
Builds on Real numbers
Definition
Let be real numbers. Let be a function on that is integrable on and on for each with . If the limit exists, it is the Cauchy principal value of the integral of over . Let be a function on that is integrable on each interval . If the limit exists, it is the Cauchy principal value of the integral of over .
Remarks
The integral does not exist as an improper integral, but , because the two parts cancel. Similarly, , because for each . When the improper integral exists, the principal value exists and has the same value. Principal values occur in the evaluation of real integrals by residues when the integrand has a pole on the real axis.
