Integral transforms, operational calculus Laplace transform: definition and convergence Counterexample
Function with no Laplace transform
Builds on Laplace transformAnalyticity of the Laplace transform in its half-planeFunction of exponential order
Counterexample
The function on is continuous, but its Laplace integral converges for no . Check: suppose it converged at some . By the half-plane theorem it would then converge at every real . But for real and , the integrand satisfies , so as . This is a contradiction, so the abscissa of convergence of is . The function is not of exponential order: for every real .
Remarks
Exponential order is sufficient, not necessary, for a Laplace transform to exist. For example, is not of exponential order, yet stays bounded, and integration by parts shows that its Laplace integral converges for every with . A different obstruction is local: has no Laplace transform because diverges, whatever is.
