Statement
Let and let be a bounded domain. For , let be a -dimensional Brownian motion started at , with law and expectation . Let be the exit time of . Let be continuous, and define
- almost surely, and is harmonic on .
- If is a regular boundary point, then as with .
- If every point of is regular, then extended by is the unique solution of the Dirichlet problem with data .
Remarks
Proof idea: is a stopping time, and because is bounded. Take a ball . The strong Markov property at the exit time of the ball and rotation invariance show that is the average of over the sphere . A bounded measurable function with this mean value property is harmonic. At a regular point , a path started near leaves quickly and close to , with high probability, which gives clause 2. Example: for the unit disc and , the exit point is uniform on the circle, so is the average of , as the mean value property requires. Regularity is needed: on the punctured disc in , Brownian motion never hits , so ignores . With and on the unit circle one gets , which does not tend to at .

For a student
The theorem identifies classical potential theory with the theory of Brownian motion. The probabilistic regularity criterion, , agrees with the analytic notion of a regular point given by barriers or Wiener's criterion. The formula also gives Monte Carlo methods for harmonic functions, such as the walk-on-spheres method. The distribution of under is the harmonic measure of at .
