Definition
Let , let be an open set, and let be a function, usually subharmonic. A harmonic majorant of is a harmonic function on such that for every .
Remarks
Symmetrically, a harmonic minorant of is a harmonic with , so is a harmonic minorant of exactly when is a harmonic majorant of . For a holomorphic on the unit disc and , lies in the Hardy space if and only if the subharmonic function has a harmonic majorant.
Example: on the unit disc , let . The constant is harmonic and on , so is a harmonic majorant of .
Non-example: on all of , has no harmonic majorant. A harmonic with would be a harmonic function bounded below on , hence constant by Liouville's theorem for harmonic functions. No constant is at least for all .
