Divergence
Definition
Let be open, and let be a vector field whose partial derivatives exist on . The divergence of is the function ,
Remarks
The divergence is the trace of the Jacobian matrix of . For on , . For the rotation field , . The divergence is linear, and for a differentiable function . Take a field and a small region around . The divergence at is the limit of the outward flux through the boundary of the region, divided by its volume. This follows from the divergence theorem.
