Definition
Let be a locally compact Hausdorff space with a countable base. To each open set , let a linear subspace of the real continuous functions on be given. Its elements are called harmonic on . An open set with compact closure is regular if the following holds for every continuous . There is a unique continuous with and on , and whenever . The pair is a harmonic space if:
- is a sheaf. Restrictions of harmonic functions to smaller open sets are harmonic. A continuous function on that is harmonic on each is harmonic on .
- The regular sets form a base of the topology of .
- For every open and every increasing sequence in whose limit is locally bounded on , the function lies in .
Remarks
These are the axioms in the form given by Bauer; several authors add a positivity or separation axiom, and some impose a stronger convergence axiom. Example: with the classical harmonic functions on . Clause 1 is clear, since harmonicity is a local condition. Every ball is regular, by the Poisson integral and the maximum principle, so clause 2 holds. Clause 3 follows from Harnack's principle. A second example is with the solutions of the heat equation on . Non-example: on , let be all continuous functions on . No open set with nonempty boundary is regular, since a continuous extension of boundary values is never unique, so clause 2 fails.
