Harmonic function
Builds on LaplacianLaplacian as a sum of second partial derivativesC^k function characterised by continuous derivatives
Definition
Let be open. A function is harmonic on if is of class C^2 on and its Laplacian vanishes on :
Remarks
Each affine function is harmonic. In the plane, , and are harmonic, and so is on . On , is harmonic. It is the potential of a unit point charge at the origin. The real and imaginary parts of a holomorphic function of are harmonic functions of . Mean value property: let the closed ball of centre and radius lie in . Then is the average of on the sphere of radius about , and also on the ball.
