Hessian matrix
Builds on Higher partial derivatives
Definition
Let be open, let , and let be a point at which all second partial derivatives of exist. The Hessian matrix of at is the matrix whose entry in row and column is at . It is also written or .
Remarks
If the second partial derivatives of are continuous near , then is a symmetric matrix, by Schwarz's theorem. For , the Hessian matrix at each point is . The Hessian matrix is the Jacobian matrix of the gradient map , when this map is differentiable. At a critical point, the signs of the eigenvalues of decide the second derivative test.
