Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded open set whose boundary ∂Ω\partial\Omega is a C1C^1 hypersurface. Let σ\sigma be surface measure on ∂Ω\partial\Omega and ν(y)\nu(y) the outward unit normal at y∈∂Ωy \in \partial\Omega. Let Φ\Phi be the fundamental solution of the Laplacian, normalised by −ΔΦ=δ0-\Delta\Phi = \delta_0. Let φ ⁣:∂Ω→ℝ\varphi \colon \partial\Omega \to \R be continuous. The double layer potential with density φ\varphi is the function Dφ(x)=∫∂Ω∂Φ(x−y)∂ν(y) φ(y) dσ(y),x∈ℝn∖∂Ω,D\varphi(x) = \int_{\partial\Omega} \frac{\partial \Phi(x - y)}{\partial \nu(y)}\, \varphi(y)\, d\sigma(y), \qquad x \in \R^n \setminus \partial\Omega, where ∂Φ(x−y)∂ν(y)=ν(y)⋅∇y[Φ(x−y)]\dfrac{\partial \Phi(x - y)}{\partial \nu(y)} = \nu(y) \cdot \nabla_y \big[\Phi(x - y)\big] is the derivative in yy along the outward normal.

Remarks

The integral is a surface integral with an integrand that is smooth in xx off ∂Ω\partial\Omega, and DφD\varphi is harmonic on ℝn∖∂Ω\R^n \setminus \partial\Omega. For n=3n = 3, Φ(x)=1/(4π∣x∣)\Phi(x) = 1/(4\pi\abs{x}) and the kernel is ν(y)⋅(x−y)4π∣x−y∣3\dfrac{\nu(y) \cdot (x - y)}{4\pi \abs{x - y}^3}.

Example (Gauss's integral): let φ≡1\varphi \equiv 1. By the divergence theorem, D1(x)=−1D1(x) = -1 for x∈Ωx \in \Omega and D1(x)=0D1(x) = 0 for x∉Ω‾x \notin \overline{\Omega}. For the unit ball in ℝ3\R^3 and x=0x = 0 this is a direct check: ν(y)=y\nu(y) = y, so the kernel is y⋅(−y)/(4π)=−1/(4π)y \cdot (-y)/(4\pi) = -1/(4\pi), and the sphere has area 4π4\pi.

Non-example: replacing the normal derivative of Φ\Phi by Φ\Phi itself gives the single layer potential instead. For the unit ball in ℝ3\R^3 with φ≡1\varphi \equiv 1, that potential equals 11 inside the ball, while the double layer potential equals −1-1 there.
