Flux through a surface

Definition
Let be an oriented surface with unit normal field , and let be a continuous vector field on . The flux of through is the surface integral
Remarks
If is a regular parametrisation of with pointing in the direction of , then the flux is . Reversing the orientation of changes the sign of the flux. The notation , with , is common. Example: for and the unit sphere with the outward normal , we get , so the flux is the area . If is the velocity field of a fluid, the flux is the volume of fluid that crosses per unit time. Flow in the direction of counts as positive.
