Potential theory Harmonic functions Theorem

Liouville's theorem for harmonic functions

Builds on Harmonic functionGradient estimates for harmonic functionsHarnack's inequality

Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let u ⁣:ℝn→ℝu \colon \R^n \to \R be harmonic on all of ℝn\R^n. If uu is bounded above or bounded below on ℝn\R^n, then uu is constant.

Remarks

Proof idea for a bounded function, ∣u∣≤M\abs{u} \le M: by the gradient estimate on the ball B(x,r)B(x, r), ∣∇u(x)∣≤nM/r\abs{\nabla u(x)} \le n M / r for every r>0r > 0. Letting r→∞r \to \infty gives ∇u=0\nabla u = 0 everywhere, so uu is constant. If uu is only bounded below, say u≥mu \ge m, apply Harnack's inequality to the nonnegative harmonic function u−mu - m on larger and larger balls. It shows that u−mu - m is bounded, and the first case applies. The theorem fails on proper subsets: on the half-space {xn>0}\set{x_n > 0}, u=xnu = x_n is bounded below and not constant. Some one-sided condition is needed: u(x,y)=xu(x, y) = x is harmonic on ℝ2\R^2 and not constant. A harmonic function on ℝn\R^n with ∣u(x)∣≤C(1+∣x∣)k\abs{u(x)} \le C(1 + \abs{x})^k is a harmonic polynomial of degree at most kk.

Going deeper

For a student

For n=2n = 2 this is the real counterpart of Liouville's theorem for entire functions, and the two imply each other through harmonic conjugates. The theorem gives uniqueness of solutions of Poisson's equation on ℝn\R^n that tend to 00 at infinity. It is the prototype of Liouville theorems for elliptic equations and for harmonic maps. On ℝn\R^n minus a point, or on other spaces, the analogous question leads to the distinction between parabolic and hyperbolic spaces.
