Potential theory Harmonic functions Theorem
Maximum principle for harmonic functions
Builds on Harmonic functionMean value propertyMaximum principle
Statement
Let be a domain, that is, a connected open set, and let be harmonic.
- (Strong maximum principle.) If there is with , then is constant on .
- (Weak maximum principle.) If is bounded and extends continuously to the closure , then .
Remarks
Proof idea for part 1: the set is closed in by continuity. It is open: if and , the mean value property over the ball makes the average of values , which forces on the ball. As is connected and is not empty, . Part 2 follows: the maximum of on the compact set is attained, and if it were attained only inside, part 1 would make constant. Example: on the unit disc takes its maximum on the boundary, at , and the value at the centre. Boundedness is needed in part 2: on the half-plane , is on the boundary and positive inside. Connectedness is needed in part 1. On two disjoint discs, the function equal to on one and on the other is harmonic and attains its maximum without being constant. This is the harmonic case of the general maximum principle for elliptic operators.

For a student
The weak maximum principle gives uniqueness for the Dirichlet problem. Two harmonic functions with the same boundary values differ by a harmonic function that is on the boundary, hence inside. It also gives stability: if the boundary values of two solutions differ by at most , then the solutions differ by at most everywhere. Subharmonic functions satisfy the same maximum principle, and Perron's method builds solutions of the Dirichlet problem from it.
