Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2, let B={x∈ℝn:∣x∣<1}B = \set{x \in \R^n : \abs{x} < 1} and let S=∂BS = \partial B. For ζ∈S\zeta \in S and α>1\alpha > 1, the nontangential approach region at ζ\zeta is Γα(ζ)={x∈B:∣x−ζ∣<α(1−∣x∣)}.\Gamma_\alpha(\zeta) = \set{x \in B : \abs{x - \zeta} < \alpha (1 - \abs{x})}. Let u ⁣:B→ℂu \colon B \to \C and L∈ℂL \in \C. The function uu has nontangential limit LL at ζ\zeta if, for every α>1\alpha > 1, u(x)→Lu(x) \to L as x→ζx \to \zeta with x∈Γα(ζ)x \in \Gamma_\alpha(\zeta).

Remarks

The limit along Γα(ζ)\Gamma_\alpha(\zeta) is a limit of a function of several variables restricted to that set; ζ\zeta is a limit point of each Γα(ζ)\Gamma_\alpha(\zeta). For the unit disc the regions Γα(ζ)\Gamma_\alpha(\zeta) are the Stolz angles, and the same definition works for the upper half-space with cones {(x,t):∣x−x0∣<αt}\set{(x, t) : \abs{x - x_0} < \alpha t}. A nontangential limit implies the radial limit lim⁡r→1u(rζ)=L\lim_{r \to 1} u(r\zeta) = L. Example: let f(z)=exp⁡(−1+z1−z)f(z) = \exp\left(-\frac{1 + z}{1 - z}\right) on the unit disc and ζ=1\zeta = 1. Since Re⁡1+z1−z=1−∣z∣2∣1−z∣2\operatorname{Re} \frac{1 + z}{1 - z} = \frac{1 - \abs{z}^2}{\abs{1 - z}^2}, on Γα(1)\Gamma_\alpha(1) this is at least 1α2(1−∣z∣)\frac{1}{\alpha^2 (1 - \abs{z})}, which tends to +∞+\infty. So ff has nontangential limit 00 at 11. On the circle ∣z−1/2∣=1/2\abs{z - 1/2} = 1/2 the same real part equals 11, so ∣f∣=e−1\abs{f} = e^{-1} there, and ff has no unrestricted limit at 11. Non-example: the Poisson kernel u(z)=1−∣z∣2∣1−z∣2u(z) = \frac{1 - \abs{z}^2}{\abs{1 - z}^2} has u(r)=1+r1−r→+∞u(r) = \frac{1 + r}{1 - r} \to +\infty, so it has no finite nontangential limit at 11. By Fatou's theorem, the Poisson integral of an integrable function has a nontangential limit at almost every boundary point.
