Definition
Let be an open set, write with real, and let with real-valued. Suppose that all first partial derivatives of and exist on . The function satisfies the Cauchy–Riemann equations on if for every , at every point of ,
Remarks
With the Wirtinger derivatives , the real equations are the complex equations , . For they are the classical Cauchy–Riemann equations. A function of class on is holomorphic if and only if it satisfies the Cauchy–Riemann equations on . Example: satisfies them, since and . Non-example: satisfies the pair for but not the pair for , since , which is not zero when .
