Definition

Let aa be a real number, and let FF be a holomorphic function on the half-plane {s∈ℂ:Re⁡s>a}\{s \in \C : \operatorname{Re} s > a\}. Let γ>a\gamma > a be real and let tt be real. The Bromwich integral of FF along the line Re⁡s=γ\operatorname{Re} s = \gamma, at time tt, is 12πi∫γ−i∞γ+i∞estF(s) ds=12πilim⁡T→∞∫γ−iTγ+iTestF(s) ds.\frac{1}{2 \pi i} \int_{\gamma - i \infty}^{\gamma + i \infty} e^{s t} F(s) \, ds = \frac{1}{2 \pi i} \lim_{T \to \infty} \int_{\gamma - i T}^{\gamma + i T} e^{s t} F(s) \, ds. Each integral on the right is the contour integral along the vertical segment from γ−iT\gamma - i T to γ+iT\gamma + i T. The Bromwich integral exists at tt when this limit exists.

Remarks

Example: let F(s)=1/sF(s) = 1/s on Re⁡s>0\operatorname{Re} s > 0, and γ>0\gamma > 0. For t>0t > 0 one closes the segment by a large arc to the left, whose contribution tends to 00. The residue of est/se^{s t}/s at 00 is 11, so the integral is 11. For t<0t < 0 one closes to the right, where there are no poles, and gets 00; for t=0t = 0 the symmetric limit is 12πilim⁡T→∞(log⁡(γ+iT)−log⁡(γ−iT))=12\frac{1}{2 \pi i} \lim_{T \to \infty} \left( \log(\gamma + i T) - \log(\gamma - i T) \right) = \tfrac{1}{2}. Non-example: for F(s)=1F(s) = 1 and t≠0t \ne 0, the integral over the segment equals eγtsin⁡(Tt)/(πt)e^{\gamma t} \sin(T t) / (\pi t), which has no limit as T→∞T \to \infty; so the Bromwich integral does not exist. The limit is a symmetric one; it can exist even when estF(s)e^{s t} F(s) is not absolutely integrable on the line. The integral is also called the Fourier–Mellin integral. When FF is the Laplace transform of a suitable function ff, the integral equals f(t)f(t) at each t>0t > 0 where ff is continuous; this is Mellin's inverse formula.
