Definition

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a connected open set. A potential on Ω\Omega is a function uu on Ω\Omega such that:

  1. uu is superharmonic on Ω\Omega.
  2. u≥0u \ge 0 on Ω\Omega.
  3. The greatest harmonic minorant of uu is 00; equivalently, every harmonic function hh on Ω\Omega with h≤uh \le u satisfies h≤0h \le 0.

Remarks

Since u≥0u \ge 0, the function 00 is a harmonic minorant, so the greatest harmonic minorant exists; it is −h0-h_0, where h0h_0 is the least harmonic majorant of −u-u. Let Ω\Omega have a Green function GG. Then the Riesz decomposition theorem shows that the potentials are exactly the functions x↦∫G(x,y) dμ(y)x \mapsto \int G(x, y)\, d\mu(y). Here μ\mu runs over the positive measures for which this function is not identically +∞+\infty. Every nonnegative superharmonic function is uniquely the sum of a potential and a nonnegative harmonic function.

Example: for n≥3n \ge 3 let u(x)=∣x∣2−nu(x) = \abs{x}^{2-n} on Ω=ℝn\Omega = \R^n, with u(0)=+∞u(0) = +\infty. It is superharmonic and positive. Let hh be harmonic with h≤uh \le u, and fix aa. By the mean value property, h(a)h(a) is the mean of hh over the sphere S(a,R)S(a, R), which is at most the mean of uu there, namely max⁡(∣a∣,R)2−n\max(\abs{a}, R)^{2-n}. Letting R→∞R \to \infty gives h(a)≤0h(a) \le 0, so uu is a potential.

Non-example: on a bounded domain the constant u=1u = 1 is superharmonic and nonnegative, but h=1h = 1 is a harmonic minorant with h>0h > 0, so clause 3 fails.
