Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2, let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set, and let uu be subharmonic on Ω\Omega and not identically −∞-\infty on any connected component. Let μ\mu be the Riesz measure of uu, so μ=Δu\mu = \Delta u in the sense of distributions. Let E(x)=12πlog⁡∣x∣ (n=2),E(x)=−∣x∣2−n(n−2) ωn (n≥3),E(x) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \log\abs{x} \ (n = 2), \qquad E(x) = -\frac{\abs{x}^{2-n}}{(n-2)\,\omega_n} \ (n \ge 3), where ωn\omega_n is the area of the unit sphere in ℝn\R^n, so that ΔE=δ0\Delta E = \delta_0. Let UU be an open set whose closure is compact and contained in Ω\Omega. Then there is a harmonic function hh on UU such that u(x)=∫UE(x−y) dμ(y)+h(x)for all x∈U.u(x) = \int_U E(x - y)\, d\mu(y) + h(x) \qquad \text{for all } x \in U.

Remarks

Proof idea: the measure μ\mu restricted to UU is finite, so p(x)=∫UE(x−y) dμ(y)p(x) = \int_U E(x - y)\, d\mu(y) is subharmonic on ℝn\R^n and Δp=μ\Delta p = \mu on UU in the sense of distributions. Then Δ(u−p)=0\Delta(u - p) = 0 on UU as a distribution, and Weyl's lemma makes u−pu - p equal, almost everywhere, to a harmonic function hh. Both uu and p+hp + h are subharmonic, and two subharmonic functions that agree almost everywhere agree everywhere, since each is the limit of its ball averages.

Example: for u(z)=log⁡∣z∣u(z) = \log\abs{z} on ℂ\C, μ=2πδ0\mu = 2\pi\delta_0, so ∫E(z−w) dμ(w)=log⁡∣z∣\int E(z - w)\, d\mu(w) = \log\abs{z} and h=0h = 0. Let ff be a polynomial with leading coefficient cc and zeros a1,…,aka_1, \dots, a_k listed with multiplicity. Then log⁡∣f(z)∣=∑jlog⁡∣z−aj∣+log⁡∣c∣\log\abs{f(z)} = \sum_j \log\abs{z - a_j} + \log\abs{c} on all of ℂ\C, which has the same form, with the constant h=log⁡∣c∣h = \log\abs{c} as harmonic part.

A global form holds on a domain Ω\Omega with a Green function GG, normalised by −ΔG(⋅,y)=δy-\Delta G(\cdot, y) = \delta_y. Let uu be a superharmonic function on Ω\Omega that has a subharmonic minorant. Then uu is the sum of the Green potential of the measure −Δu-\Delta u and the greatest harmonic minorant of uu.

For a student

The theorem reduces many questions about subharmonic functions to questions about measures and their potentials. For log⁡∣f∣\log\abs{f} with ff holomorphic it is the analytic form of factoring ff through its zeros, as in Jensen's formula and the Hadamard factorisation of entire functions. In the global form on Green domains, it identifies the positive superharmonic functions with zero greatest harmonic minorant, the potentials, with Green potentials of measures.
