Convolution power
Builds on ConvolutionLp spaceAssociativity of convolutionDirac measure
Definition
Let and let . For each integer , the -th convolution power is defined by recursion: where is the convolution.
Remarks
By associativity of convolution, is the convolution of copies of in any bracketing, and . Each lies in with . For finite Borel measures the same recursion applies, and one sets , the Dirac measure at , which is the unit for convolution.
Example: for let for and for , the exponential density. Then for . The induction step is This is the Erlang density of the sum of independent exponential waiting times.
Non-example: the constant on is not in , and indeed is defined nowhere, since .
