Conservative vector field
Builds on Vector fieldGradientC^k function characterised by continuous derivatives
Definition
Let be open, and let be a continuous vector field. The field is conservative on if there is a function of class C^1 with on , that is, for .
Remarks
A function with is a scalar potential of . Physics texts often use instead. The field is conservative on , with . The field is not conservative on . Its line integral around the unit circle is , which contradicts path independence. If is conservative and of class , then its curl is zero. The converse holds on convex sets but fails in general.
