Curl-free field that is not conservative
Builds on CurlConservative vector fieldCurl-free vector field on a convex set is conservativeSimply connected domainPath independence of line integralsLine integral of a vector field
Counterexample
One could guess that each vector field with zero curl on an open set is conservative. This is false. Let , which is minus the -axis, and let Then on , but is not conservative on .
Remarks
The third component of is , and the other two components are zero. On the unit circle , , we have . So the circulation is , and path independence fails. The domain is not simply connected, so this does not contradict the theorem for convex or simply connected sets. Locally, , where is the polar angle of . But no continuous choice of exists on all of .
