Definition

Let γ ⁣:[a,b]→ℝn\gamma \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R}^n be a rectifiable curve with image CC, and let f ⁣:C→ℝf \colon C \to \mathbb{R} be continuous. For a partition a=t0<t1<⋯<tk=ba = t_0 < t_1 < \dots < t_k = b and points τi∈[ti−1,ti]\tau_i \in [t_{i-1}, t_i], let Δsi\Delta s_i be the length of the restriction of γ\gamma to [ti−1,ti][t_{i-1}, t_i]. The line integral of ff along γ\gamma is the limit ∫γf ds=lim⁡∑i=1kf(γ(τi)) Δsi,\int_\gamma f \, ds = \lim \sum_{i=1}^{k} f(\gamma(\tau_i)) \, \Delta s_i, taken as max⁡i(ti−ti−1)→0\max_i (t_i - t_{i-1}) \to 0.

Remarks

The limit exists, and it does not depend on the choice of the points τi\tau_i. For a C1C^1 curve, ∫γf ds=∫abf(γ(t)) ∥γ′(t)∥ dt\int_\gamma f \, ds = \int_a^b f(\gamma(t)) \, \|\gamma'(t)\| \, dt. This is the parametric formula. For f=1f = 1 the line integral is the length of γ\gamma. If γ\gamma is a wire with linear density ff, the line integral is its mass. The value does not change under a reparametrisation of γ\gamma, in either direction.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
