Scalar potential
Definition
Let be open, and let be a continuous vector field. A scalar potential of is a function of class with on .
Remarks
In physics, a potential is often a function with , so that is a potential energy. The two conventions differ by a sign. If is connected, two scalar potentials of differ by a constant. Indeed, their difference has zero gradient on . On a connected open set one finds a potential by fixing and setting for a path from to . This works when is conservative. Example: the gravitational field on has the scalar potential .
