Quasilinear PDE
Builds on Partial differential equationOrder of a PDEMulti-index notation
Definition
Let be an open set in and let . A partial differential equation of order in is quasilinear if it has the following form. Here the functions and are given. Here runs over multi-indices, and denotes the collection of all partial derivatives of order . So the equation is affine in the derivatives of order , and its coefficients depend at most on the derivatives of order less than .
Remarks
Example: the minimal surface equation in two variables expands to . The coefficients of , , depend only on first derivatives, so it is quasilinear of order . Non-example: the Monge–Ampère equation is not quasilinear, because it contains products of second derivatives; it is fully nonlinear. Every semilinear PDE is quasilinear. For first-order equations, quasilinear means .
