Definition
Let be an open set in and let . A partial differential equation of order in is semilinear if it has the following form. Here the coefficients of the highest-order derivatives depend on only, and is a given function, which may be nonlinear. Here runs over multi-indices, and denotes the collection of all partial derivatives of order .
Remarks
Example: in , with , is semilinear of order ; its highest-order part has constant coefficients, and . Non-example: is not semilinear, because the coefficient of the highest-order derivative depends on the unknown; it is quasilinear. Every linear PDE is semilinear, with affine in the lower-order derivatives.
