Definition
Let be an open subset of and let be continuous. Let be an open interval and let be a solution of whose graph lies in . The solution is maximal if there is no solution on an open interval with and for each . The interval of a maximal solution is its maximal interval of existence.
Remarks
If is locally Lipschitz in , each initial value problem with has exactly one maximal solution. Each other solution of the problem is a restriction of it. The maximal interval can depend on the initial value, and it can be smaller than . If , then leaves every compact subset of as . For , this means . See blow-up in finite time.
