Definition

Let x˙=F(x,μ)\dot x = F(x, \mu), μ∈ℝ\mu \in \R, be a smooth one-parameter family of vector fields on ℝn\R^n. Assume that for μ\mu near μ0\mu_0 the system has a hyperbolic equilibrium xμx_\mu of saddle type, depending smoothly on μ\mu. The family has a homoclinic bifurcation at μ0\mu_0 if the following hold.

  1. At μ=μ0\mu = \mu_0 there is a homoclinic orbit Γ\Gamma to xμ0x_{\mu_0}: an orbit with x(t)→xμ0x(t) \to x_{\mu_0} as t→+∞t \to +\infty and as t→−∞t \to -\infty.
  2. For μ≠μ0\mu \ne \mu_0 close to μ0\mu_0 there is no homoclinic orbit to xμx_\mu near Γ\Gamma.

Remarks

The orbit Γ\Gamma lies in both the stable and the unstable manifold of xμ0x_{\mu_0}, given by the stable manifold theorem. It is a global bifurcation in the sense of bifurcation theory, since it depends on a whole orbit and not only on the equilibrium. In the plane, let λ1<0<λ2\lambda_1 < 0 < \lambda_2 be the eigenvalues at the saddle and σ=λ1+λ2\sigma = \lambda_1 + \lambda_2. If σ≠0\sigma \ne 0 and the loop splits transversally in μ\mu, a unique limit cycle appears near Γ\Gamma on one side of μ0\mu_0, stable if σ<0\sigma < 0 and unstable if σ>0\sigma > 0. Example: for x˙=y\dot x = y, y˙=x−x2+μy\dot y = x - x^2 + \mu y, let H=y2/2−x2/2+x3/3H = y^2/2 - x^2/2 + x^3/3. Along solutions H˙=μy2\dot H = \mu y^2. At μ=0\mu = 0 the level set H=0H = 0 contains a homoclinic loop to the saddle (0,0)(0, 0), in the half-plane x>0x > 0. For μ≠0\mu \ne 0, HH is strictly monotone along nonconstant orbits, so no orbit can leave and return to the saddle, and the loop is broken. Here σ=μ\sigma = \mu vanishes at μ0=0\mu_0 = 0, so this example is degenerate and no limit cycle is born. Non-example: the constant family x˙=y\dot x = y, y˙=x−x2\dot y = x - x^2, which does not depend on μ\mu, fails clause 2, since the loop persists for every μ\mu.
