Flow of a vector field
Builds on Autonomous systemUniqueness of solutions for Lipschitz vector fieldsMaximal solution
Definition
Let be an open subset of and let be locally Lipschitz. For , let be the maximal solution of the autonomous system with . Let . The flow of is the map given by . Another notation is .
Remarks
The flow has the group properties and , whenever both sides are defined. The second property follows from uniqueness and time translation. The set is open and is continuous on . If , the flow is complete. Then is an action of the additive group on . For a linear system , the flow is , the matrix exponential.
