Periodic orbit
Builds on Autonomous systemTrajectorySolution of an ordinary differential equation
Definition
Let be an open subset of , let be locally Lipschitz, and consider the autonomous system . A solution is periodic if it is not constant and there is a real number with for each . The smallest such is the period of . A periodic orbit, or closed orbit, is the trajectory of a periodic solution .
Remarks
A non-constant periodic solution has a smallest period , because is continuous and not constant. A periodic orbit is a simple closed curve in . Let a maximal solution that is not constant satisfy for one and one . Then, by uniqueness, is defined on and is periodic. For the harmonic oscillator , , each circle with is a periodic orbit of period .
