Mechanics of particles and systems Linear vibrations Example
Harmonic oscillator
Builds on Solutions for complex conjugate roots
Example
Let and be constants, and let . The equation of the harmonic oscillator is It models a mass on a spring with stiffness , where is the displacement from the rest position. Its characteristic roots are , so its solutions are with constants and .
Remarks
Each nonzero solution is periodic with period . The period does not depend on the amplitude . The energy is constant along each solution. It is a first integral. With friction, the equation becomes the damped harmonic oscillator.
