Special functions Theorem

Euler's formula

Builds on Complex numbers

Statement

For every complex number zz, eiz=cos⁡z+isin⁡z.e^{i z} = \cos z + i \sin z. Here ew=∑n=0∞wn/n!e^{w} = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} w^n / n! is the complex exponential function, and cos⁡\cos and sin⁡\sin are given by their power series.

Remarks

The main case is a real number z=xz = x. Then cos⁡x\cos x and sin⁡x\sin x are the real and imaginary parts of eixe^{i x}, and ∣eix∣=1|e^{i x}| = 1. For x=πx = \pi, the formula gives Euler's identity. A proof compares the power series: the even terms of eize^{i z} give cos⁡z\cos z and the odd terms give isin⁡zi \sin z.
