Statement
Let and . Let be a sequence of real random variables such that where is convergence in distribution and is the normal distribution. Let be differentiable at . Then
Remarks
Idea of proof: by differentiability, with as . Since in probability, in probability, and is bounded in probability. So the remainder times tends to in probability, and Slutsky's lemma gives the limit .
Multivariate form: if in , with a multivariate normal limit, and is differentiable at with Jacobian matrix , then .
Example: for i.i.d. Poisson variables with mean , the central limit theorem gives . With , , so . The limit variance no longer depends on : the square root is a variance-stabilizing transformation for Poisson data.
If , the limit is the point mass at , and one needs a second-order expansion: if exists, then .

For a student
The delta method turns the central limit theorem for averages into limit laws for smooth functions of averages: ratios, logarithms, correlation coefficients, odds ratios. It gives approximate standard errors and confidence intervals for such quantities. It is also the step that passes from the asymptotic normality of an estimator to that of , for example for maximum likelihood estimators. Variance-stabilizing transformations are chosen with it: one picks so that does not depend on .
