Lévy's continuity theorem

Builds on Characteristic functionConvergence in distributionThe characteristic function determines the distribution

Statement

Let X,X1,X2,…X, X_1, X_2, \dots be real random variables with characteristic functions φ,φ1,φ2,…\varphi, \varphi_1, \varphi_2, \dots.

  1. If Xn→XX_n \to X in distribution, then φn(t)→φ(t)\varphi_n(t) \to \varphi(t) for each t∈ℝt \in \mathbb{R}.
  2. Conversely, suppose that φn(t)\varphi_n(t) converges to a limit ψ(t)\psi(t) for each t∈ℝt \in \mathbb{R}, and that ψ\psi is continuous at 00. Then ψ\psi is the characteristic function of a random variable YY, and Xn→YX_n \to Y in distribution.

Remarks

Part 1 follows from the definition of convergence in distribution with the bounded continuous functions cos⁡(tx)\cos(tx) and sin⁡(tx)\sin(tx). The continuity at 00 in part 2 is necessary. For Xn∼𝒩(0,n)X_n \sim \mathcal{N}(0, n), φn(t)=e−nt2/2\varphi_n(t) = e^{-nt^2/2} tends to 1{t=0}1_{\{t = 0\}}, which is not continuous at 00, and XnX_n does not converge in distribution. The theorem holds in the same form for random vectors in ℝk\mathbb{R}^k.

History

The theorem is named after Paul Lévy.
