De Moivre–Laplace theorem
Builds on Binomial distributionNormal distributionConvergence in distributionCentral limit theorem
Statement
Let and let for each . Let . Then converges in distribution to . That is, for all reals ,
Remarks
This is the special case of the central limit theorem for Bernoulli variables. Indeed, has the law of a sum of independent Bernoulli() variables. A local form also holds: as , uniformly for with . The proof uses Stirling's formula. In practice, one often adds a continuity correction of to the integer bounds.
History
Abraham de Moivre proved the case . Pierre-Simon Laplace extended it to general .
