Statement
Let be real numbers, and let be the characteristic polynomial of the equation . Let be a real root of of multiplicity . Then the functions are linearly independent solutions of the equation on . If all the roots of are real, the union of these families over the distinct roots of is a fundamental system.
Remarks
For order : if is a double root of , the solutions are . Example: has , so its solutions are . The same result holds for complex roots, with complex solutions. For the real form, see complex conjugate roots.
