Ordinary differential equations Example
Blow-up in finite time
Builds on Maximal solutionSeparable equationInitial value problem
Example
Let and consider the initial value problem , . Separation of variables gives the solution This is the maximal solution: as from below. So the solution blows up at the finite time , although the field is smooth on all of .
Remarks
The blow-up time depends on the initial value. Larger initial values blow up sooner. For , the maximal interval is , and for the solution is on . The field is not globally Lipschitz. A globally Lipschitz field has no blow-up. Near the blow-up time, behaves like . This is a finite-time singularity.
