Definition

Let VV be a Hausdorff, locally compact topological space with a countable basis of open sets. A stratification of VV is a locally finite partition 𝒮\mathcal{S} of VV into locally closed subsets, called strata. Each stratum must be a smooth manifold in the subspace topology. The frontier condition must hold: if X,Y∈𝒮X, Y \in \mathcal{S} and X∩Y‾≠∅X \cap \overline{Y} \neq \emptyset, then X⊆Y‾X \subseteq \overline{Y}. One writes X<YX < Y when X≠YX \ne Y and X⊆Y‾X \subseteq \overline{Y}. Control data for 𝒮\mathcal{S} consist of three things for each stratum XX. They are an open neighbourhood TXT_X of XX in VV, a continuous retraction πX ⁣:TX→X\pi_X \colon T_X \to X, and a continuous function ρX ⁣:TX→[0,∞)\rho_X \colon T_X \to [0, \infty) with ρX−1(0)=X\rho_X^{-1}(0) = X. A Thom–Mather stratified space is a triple (V,𝒮,𝒥)(V, \mathcal{S}, \mathcal{J}), where 𝒥\mathcal{J} is control data for 𝒮\mathcal{S}, such that:

  1. For all strata X<YX < Y, the map (πX,ρX) ⁣:TX∩Y→X×(0,∞)(\pi_X, \rho_X) \colon T_X \cap Y \to X \times (0, \infty) is a smooth submersion.
  2. For all strata X<YX < Y and every stratum ZZ, the control conditions πX(πY(v))=πX(v)\pi_X(\pi_Y(v)) = \pi_X(v) and ρX(πY(v))=ρX(v)\rho_X(\pi_Y(v)) = \rho_X(v) hold for all v∈TX∩TY∩Zv \in T_X \cap T_Y \cap Z for which both sides are defined.

Remarks

Example: let V⊆ℝ2V \subseteq \R^2 be the union of the two coordinate axes, with strata X={0}X = \set{0} and the four open half-axes. Take TX=VT_X = V, πX(v)=0\pi_X(v) = 0, and ρX(v)=∣v∣2\rho_X(v) = \abs{v}^2. On each half-axis, ρX\rho_X has non-zero derivative, so (πX,ρX)(\pi_X, \rho_X) is a submersion onto X×(0,∞)X \times (0, \infty). For each half-axis YY take TY=YT_Y = Y, πY=id⁡Y\pi_Y = \id_Y and ρY=0\rho_Y = 0. Then the only control conditions to check are πX(πY(v))=0=πX(v)\pi_X(\pi_Y(v)) = 0 = \pi_X(v) and ρX(πY(v))=ρX(v)\rho_X(\pi_Y(v)) = \rho_X(v) for v∈Yv \in Y, which hold since πY(v)=v\pi_Y(v) = v.

Non-example: give V=ℝV = \R the strata X={0}X = \set{0} and Y=ℝ∖{0}Y = \R \setminus \set{0}, with TX=ℝT_X = \R and πX=0\pi_X = 0. Let ρX(v)=∣vsin⁡(1/v)∣\rho_X(v) = \abs{v \sin(1/v)} for v≠0v \ne 0 and ρX(0)=0\rho_X(0) = 0; this function is continuous. It vanishes at the points v=1/(kπ)v = 1/(k\pi) of YY for every integer k≠0k \ne 0, so ρX−1(0)≠X\rho_X^{-1}(0) \ne X and these are not control data.

By a theorem of Mather, every closed subset of a smooth manifold with a Whitney stratification admits control data that make it a Thom–Mather stratified space.
