Definition
Let be a connected nilpotent Lie group and let be a closed subgroup of . The homogeneous space is a nilmanifold. When is simply connected and is a lattice, a discrete subgroup with compact, the space is a compact nilmanifold.
Remarks
Example: the Heisenberg group of real matrices and the subgroup of those with . The group is nilpotent, since its commutator subgroup is the center . It is diffeomorphic to , so it is simply connected. The subgroup is discrete, and each element of is an element with times an element of , so is compact.
Non-example for the compact case: let be the integer points on the first axis of . Then is a nilmanifold, but is not a lattice in , and the cylinder is not compact.
Each nilmanifold is a solvmanifold. Many texts use the word nilmanifold only for compact nilmanifolds. By a theorem of Malcev, a simply connected nilpotent Lie group has a lattice exactly when its Lie algebra has a basis with rational structure constants.
