Definition
Let be a Lie group with identity and Lie algebra , the tangent space at . For , let be the unique one-parameter subgroup with . The exponential map of is
Remarks
Equivalently, is the integral curve through of the left-invariant vector field with value at . By rescaling, for all .
Example: for , and is a one-parameter subgroup with . So is the matrix exponential.
Non-example: in , the matrix is not of the form for any in the Lie algebra . So need not be surjective, even for a connected group.
The map is smooth and its differential at is the identity of . By the inverse function theorem, it restricts to a diffeomorphism from a neighbourhood of in onto a neighbourhood of in . For a compact connected Lie group, is surjective.
