Definition

Let GG be a real Lie group of dimension nn, with identity ee, and for g∈Gg \in G let Lg(h)=ghL_g(h) = gh. Fix a nonzero alternating nn-linear form ωe\omega_e on the tangent space TeGT_eG. Let ω\omega be the left-invariant nn-form on GG given by ωg=(Lg−1)∗ωe\omega_g = (L_{g^{-1}})^* \omega_e, a nowhere-vanishing differential form of top degree. The left Haar measure of ω\omega is the Borel measure μω\mu_\omega on GG such that ∫Gf dμω=∫Gf ∣ω∣\int_G f \, d\mu_\omega = \int_G f \, \abs{\omega} for every continuous function ff with compact support. Here ∣ω∣\abs{\omega} is the density associated with ω\omega.

Remarks

Since Lh∗ω=ωL_h^* \omega = \omega for all h∈Gh \in G, the measure μω\mu_\omega is invariant under left translations, so it is a left Haar measure of GG; changing ωe\omega_e multiplies it by a positive constant.

Example: on G=GLn(ℝ)G = GL_n(\R), open in Mn(ℝ)=ℝn2M_n(\R) = \R^{n^2}, the measure ∣det⁡X∣−n dX\abs{\det X}^{-n} \, dX, with dXdX Lebesgue measure, is a left Haar measure. Left multiplication X↦AXX \mapsto AX is linear with determinant (det⁡A)n(\det A)^n, which cancels the change of ∣det⁡X∣−n\abs{\det X}^{-n}.

Example and non-example: on G={(a,b):a>0,b∈ℝ}G = \set{(a, b) : a > 0, b \in \R} with (a,b)(a′,b′)=(aa′,ab′+b)(a, b)(a', b') = (aa', ab' + b), the measure a−2 da dba^{-2}\, da\, db is a left Haar measure. The measure a−1 da dba^{-1}\, da\, db is not left-invariant: left translation by (c,0)(c, 0) maps (a,b)(a, b) to (ca,cb)(ca, cb), with Jacobian c2c^2, and multiplies a−1 da dba^{-1}\, da\, db by cc. It is a right Haar measure instead.

A right Haar measure arises in the same way from right-invariant forms. The group is unimodular, meaning that left and right Haar measures coincide, if and only if ∣det⁡Ad⁡(g)∣=1\abs{\det \operatorname{Ad}(g)} = 1 for all g∈Gg \in G, where Ad⁡\operatorname{Ad} is the adjoint representation.
