Definition
Let be a locally compact group with a Haar measure, and let be a compact subgroup of . A function on is -bi-invariant if for all and . Let be the space of continuous, compactly supported, -bi-invariant functions on . It is closed under convolution. The pair is a Gelfand pair if for all .
Remarks
Example: and . Let , the transpose, which reverses products and preserves Haar measure. By the Cartan decomposition with diagonal, so lies in . So every bi-invariant satisfies , and then . This is Gelfand's trick.
Non-example: a finite non-abelian group and . Then every function is bi-invariant, and the convolution of the indicators of and is the indicator of . So the algebra is not commutative when .
Equivalent form: is a Gelfand pair exactly when every irreducible unitary representation of has a space of -fixed vectors of dimension at most . For finite , this says that the permutation representation of on functions on is multiplicity-free. If is a Gelfand pair, then is unimodular.
