Statement
Let be a connected and simply connected complex semisimple Lie group, and let be a maximal torus. Let be the roots of with respect to , with a set of positive roots, and let . Let be the Borel subgroup whose Lie algebra is spanned by the Lie algebra of and the root spaces of the negative roots. Let be the Weyl group with length function , and write . Let be a character of , extended to . Let be the holomorphic line bundle on the flag variety defined as follows. Its sections over an open set are the holomorphic on the preimage of in with for . The group acts on the sheaf cohomology groups by left translation.
- If is dominant, then is the irreducible representation of highest weight , and for .
- If is orthogonal to some root, then for all .
- Otherwise there is a unique such that is dominant; then is the irreducible representation of highest weight , and for .
Remarks
Part 1 is the Borel–Weil theorem, and parts 2 and 3 are Bott's extension; part 1 is the case of part 3. A short proof due to Demazure uses fibrations of with fibre to compare with for simple reflections . This reduces the computation to the case of . Example: for , and for , with . For , is the space of homogeneous polynomials of degree in two variables, the irreducible representation of dimension . For , , and indeed all cohomology of vanishes; for with , is the reflection, , and has dimension . Conventions differ: with built from the positive roots, or with the opposite sign in , one obtains dual representations instead. Since for a maximal compact subgroup , the theorem also realises all irreducible representations of compact connected simply connected Lie groups.

For a student
The theorem is a geometric companion of the Weyl character formula: applying the holomorphic Lefschetz fixed point formula to the action of on gives the character formula. It is the model for many later constructions of representations from geometry, such as geometric representation theory and the Beilinson–Bernstein localisation.
