Statement

Let GG be a connected semisimple Lie group without compact factors. Then there is an open neighbourhood UU of the identity ee in GG with the following property. For every discrete subgroup Γ\Gamma of GG there is g∈Gg \in G such that gΓg−1∩U={e}g \Gamma g^{-1} \cap U = \set{e}.

Remarks

The proof starts from a Zassenhaus neighbourhood: the elements of Γ\Gamma close to ee generate a nilpotent group. One then conjugates by suitable elements of GG that expand this nilpotent part, which is possible because GG has no compact factors.

Example: G=SL2(ℝ)G = \mathrm{SL}_2(\R) and Γ=SL2(ℤ)\Gamma = \mathrm{SL}_2(\Z). Conjugating the element (1101)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} by diag⁡(t,t−1)\operatorname{diag}(t, t^{-1}) gives (1t201)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & t^2 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, which is close to ee for small tt. So some conjugates of Γ\Gamma come close to ee, and the theorem only asserts that some conjugate stays away.

The hypothesis on compact factors is necessary. In the compact semisimple group SO(3)\mathrm{SO}(3), let Γn\Gamma_n be the finite cyclic group of rotations about one axis by multiples of 2π/n2\pi/n. Every conjugate of Γn\Gamma_n contains a rotation by the angle 2π/n2\pi/n. So for a given UU, every conjugate of Γn\Gamma_n meets U∖{e}U \setminus \set{e} once nn is large.

Going deeper

For a student

The main consequence concerns lattices. The volume of G/ΓG/\Gamma is at least a constant c(G)>0c(G) > 0 that does not depend on the lattice Γ\Gamma. Indeed a small ball around ee injects into G/(gΓg−1)G/(g\Gamma g^{-1}), and G/ΓG/\Gamma and G/(gΓg−1)G/(g\Gamma g^{-1}) have the same volume. For quotients of symmetric spaces, this gives a uniform lower bound for the volume of locally symmetric orbifolds of a given type.
