Definition
Let be a prime number. A pro- group is a profinite group such that for every open normal subgroup of the finite quotient is a p-group.
Remarks
Equivalently, is isomorphic as a topological group to an inverse limit of finite -groups. Example: the p-adic integers . Its open subgroups are the subgroups , and each quotient has order . Non-example: the profinite completion of is profinite, but it has the open normal subgroup with quotient , which is not a -group for any prime . Every finite -group with the discrete topology is a pro- group.
