Topological semigroup
Builds on SemigroupTopological spaceContinuous multiplication
Definition
A topological semigroup is a semigroup together with a topology on such that the multiplication , , is a continuous multiplication. That is, the map is continuous when carries the product topology.
Remarks
Example: with ordinary multiplication and the topology from . The product is associative, it maps into , and it is continuous as the restriction of a polynomial. Non-example: the semigroup with the cofinite topology. Addition is associative, but it is not jointly continuous: the preimage of is not open, since every nonempty basic open set contains a pair . If one asks only that each translation and be continuous, the weaker structure is called a semitopological semigroup.
