Definition

Let GG be a connected complex semisimple Lie group. Let BB be a Borel subgroup of GG, a maximal connected solvable closed complex subgroup. Let PP be a closed complex subgroup of GG with B⊆PB \subseteq P, a parabolic subgroup. The flag manifold of GG and PP is the homogeneous space G/PG/P, a complex manifold with the holomorphic action of GG by left translation. When P=BP = B, the space G/BG/B is the complete (or full) flag manifold of GG.

Remarks

Example: G=SLn(ℂ)G = \mathrm{SL}_n(\C) with BB the upper triangular matrices of determinant 11. Then GG acts transitively on complete flags V1⊂⋯⊂Vn−1V_1 \subset \cdots \subset V_{n-1} in ℂn\C^n with dim⁡Vi=i\dim V_i = i, and BB is the stabilizer of the standard flag Vi=span⁡(e1,…,ei)V_i = \operatorname{span}(e_1, \dots, e_i). So G/BG/B is the space of complete flags, of complex dimension n(n−1)/2n(n-1)/2. The subgroup PP of matrices with first column in ℂe1\C e_1 contains BB, and G/PG/P is the projective space ℂPn−1\C P^{n-1} of lines in ℂn\C^n.

Non-example: G=SL2(ℂ)G = \mathrm{SL}_2(\C) and HH the diagonal subgroup. Then HH is closed, but it does not contain any Borel subgroup, since a Borel subgroup of SL2(ℂ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\C) has complex dimension 22 and HH has dimension 11. The quotient G/HG/H is not compact, while every flag manifold is compact.

A flag manifold G/PG/P is compact, simply connected and projective algebraic. For a maximal compact subgroup KK of GG, the group KK acts transitively on G/PG/P, so G/P=K/(K∩P)G/P = K/(K \cap P). For KK compact connected and TT a maximal torus, K/TK/T is the complete flag manifold of the complexification of KK.
