Topological groups, Lie groups Topological groups: basic notions Example
Solenoid
Builds on Inverse limitCircle groupp-adic integer
Example
Let be a prime and let be the circle group. The -adic solenoid is the inverse limit of the sequence Its elements are sequences in with for all . The group law is coordinatewise multiplication, and the topology is the one induced from the product .
Check that it is a compact group. Each map is a continuous homomorphism, so the sequences with form a subgroup of . This subgroup is closed, since it is cut out by the equations between continuous functions. The product is compact by Tychonoff's theorem, so is a compact Hausdorff abelian group.
Remarks
The solenoid is connected, being an inverse limit of compact connected spaces. It is not locally connected and not path-connected, so it is a compact connected group that is not a Lie group. The projection onto is onto, and its kernel is isomorphic to the group of p-adic integers. Its Pontryagin dual is the discrete group of rationals whose denominators are powers of .
