Definition

Let GG be a topological group and let HH be a complex Hilbert space. Let U(H)U(H) be the group of unitary operators on HH. A unitary representation of GG on HH is a map π ⁣:G→U(H)\pi \colon G \to U(H) such that:

  1. π\pi is a group homomorphism: π(gh)=π(g)π(h)\pi(gh) = \pi(g)\pi(h) for all g,h∈Gg, h \in G;
  2. π\pi is strongly continuous: for every v∈Hv \in H, the map G→HG \to H, g↦π(g)vg \mapsto \pi(g)v, is continuous.

Remarks

Clause 2 says that π\pi is continuous for the strong operator topology on U(H)U(H). It is equivalent to weak continuity, the continuity of g↦⟨π(g)u,v⟩g \mapsto \ip{\pi(g)u}{v} for all u,v∈Hu, v \in H.

Example: G=(ℝ,+)G = (\R, +) on H=L2(ℝ)H = L^2(\R) by (π(t)f)(x)=f(x−t)(\pi(t)f)(x) = f(x - t). Translation preserves ∫∣f∣2\int \abs{f}^2 and has inverse π(−t)\pi(-t), so each π(t)\pi(t) is unitary, and π(s+t)=π(s)π(t)\pi(s + t) = \pi(s)\pi(t). For continuity, ∥π(t)f−f∥2→0\norm{\pi(t)f - f}_2 \to 0 as t→0t \to 0 holds for compactly supported continuous ff by uniform continuity, and then for all f∈L2(ℝ)f \in L^2(\R) since these are dense and each π(t)\pi(t) has norm 11.

Non-example: let ℓ2(ℝ)\ell^2(\R) be the Hilbert space of square-summable functions on the set ℝ\R, with orthonormal basis (δs)s∈ℝ(\delta_s)_{s \in \R}, and let π(t)δs=δs+t\pi(t)\delta_s = \delta_{s + t}. Each π(t)\pi(t) is unitary and π\pi is a homomorphism, but clause 2 fails for the usual topology of ℝ\R. Indeed ∥π(t)δ0−δ0∥=2\norm{\pi(t)\delta_0 - \delta_0} = \sqrt{2} for every t≠0t \ne 0, so π(t)δ0\pi(t)\delta_0 does not tend to δ0\delta_0 as t→0t \to 0.

Two unitary representations π1\pi_1 on H1H_1 and π2\pi_2 on H2H_2 are unitarily equivalent if there is a unitary T ⁣:H1→H2T \colon H_1 \to H_2 with Tπ1(g)=π2(g)TT\pi_1(g) = \pi_2(g)T for all g∈Gg \in G. A unitary representation is irreducible if H≠0H \ne 0 and the only closed subspaces invariant under all π(g)\pi(g) are 00 and HH.
