Definition
Let be a Lie group and let be a closed subgroup of . Let be the homogeneous space of left cosets, with acting by left multiplication. Let be a discrete subgroup of whose action on is properly discontinuous. The Clifford–Klein form of defined by is the quotient space the space of orbits of on . The group is then called a discontinuous group for .
Remarks
In much of the literature is assumed to be reductive. If is torsion-free, its stabilizers, which are finite by proper discontinuity, are trivial, so is a manifold locally modelled on . Example: , , so that is the hyperbolic plane, and the fundamental group of a closed surface of genus embedded as a cocompact discrete subgroup. Here acts freely and properly discontinuously, and is the closed hyperbolic surface. Non-example: , with irrational, and . Then through , and acts by translation by . These translations form a dense subgroup of , so the orbits are not discrete and the action is not properly discontinuous.
